WAKE UP WEDNESDAY!! CANCER

C A N C E R

What a Word!

Many will call it a scary word or a dirty word -
some won’t even say it!
My Grandmother Had Cancer.
Two Women I know have Cancer and many more people I have known in my life HAVE HAD OR STILL HAVE CANCER.  Men have Cancer, the previous owner of our home had cancer and killed himself because of it!  My neighbors wife, had cancer and passed away a few years ago - IT EFFECTS US ALL - AND we need a Wake Up Call.

What Is Cancer? : The body is made up of hundreds of millions of living cells. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide faster to allow the person to grow. After the person becomes an adult, most cells divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells or to repair injuries. Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. When I was working at a larger Hospital in Connecticut we worked closely to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research, Treatment and Education. It was rewarding work just knowing that so many people are touched by the stories or by people they knew - enough to give to this Hospital's Cancer Center. I even gave in HONOR of my Mother who at the time was NOT diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

But now she has been! She was well educated on the disease because her own mother had breast cancer and I believe had a mastectomy. I fear Cancer, but I know that there is little I can do to prevent it or stop it from happening, but for now I have to pray for my mother, friends and those I do not know who are living with cancer. I will continue to give funds, I will continue to support fundraisers and I will continue to PRAY.

Will YOU?   Feel free to tell me how I can pray for you or how Cancer has touched your life.

Oh dear... I SO feel your pain! I lost my Mom to melanoma 5 years ago. Until that time I/we had very little knowledge of cancer. The word horrified me!! We barely could say, used "the C word" when referencing it. I shuttered when anyone I knew talked about melanoma, as I now knew what that meant! Last August I too was diagnosed with melanoma; a small lesion on my foot (same as my Mom). I cannot begin to tell you the fear! I had a biopsy and second excision which came back clear. I wish I knew how to turn off the worry channel - I worry daily how long it will be before something else shows up. I stay positive and strong most days, but there are some that it about makes me nuts!

Yes, I donate to the ACS and PRAY!!!

Ok I have to be honest and say I was tempted not to read this one, but I really felt that I should.

Prayer is good and I'm sure donations are too to some extent, but what I have found is that you have to be the researcher. One doc i had admitted to me that they just don't have time to be up to date on all the latest cancer news (new stuff comes out everyday). You also have to fight for the hospitals to work together. We have many wonderful hospitals here in CT, each with their own special advantage, the more you can get the hospitals to work together and "share" patients the better the patients chances. Docs have to be willing to fight for their patients.

Personally I think more research needs to be done on chemo and more questions need to be asked. They really do push it too much (not saying it doesn't help a lot of people). In my case when i asked about it they said that it could only improve survival by like 3 months! 5 months of hell for 3 extra months? So wasn't worth it for me.

As far as worry, you just have to try to make yourself stop. It's not going to help. Even if you are diagnosed at some point you have to try to not get yourself connected to it being your diagnoses (everyone will push you to) or you will become it. At least that has been true for me.

Sorry I've rambled.

I pray for your mom. Keep us posted...
